Does your PC work on other networks reliably? If so- it's likely the DLink failing. The firmware issue is just a symptom as well. I'd recommend either seeing if you could use your DSL provider's original modem (if this was a replacement) or if you have another router- if it doesn't drop at that point, it was definitely the router/modem.

Hi all, I didn't know where to put this post, so excuses me if this is not the right place. I have D-Link DSL-2640U router. I tried to update its firmware (using google chrome) using the wireless connection.
However, if it drops still, you may have a line issue- but I severely doubt this since the symptoms are pointing to the DLink. I’m happy to help further over the phone at. If your pc is a laptop, I use the 'Go to local burger joint/coffee shop w/ free wifi hotspot' method- if you can get online and browse there- then you've just proven it's not your hardware and pc- same can be done if it's a desktop and you have a friend who doesn't mind you setting up on his/her service temporarily- if it gets online on another network- the hardware works, and the software works. The bad part would be the router if your pc is a laptop, I use the 'Go to local burger joint/coffee shop w/ free wifi hotspot' method- if you can get online and browse there- then you've just proven it's not your hardware and pc- same can be done if it's a desktop and you have a friend who doesn't mind you setting up on his/her service temporarily- if it gets online on another network- the hardware works, and the software works.
